Presidente: prof. Nicola Labanca (Università di Siena)

Interuniversity Center for historical-military research

The Centro interuniversitario di studi e ricerche storico–militari [Interuniversity Center for historical-military research] was set up in Italy in the early 1980s. It has therefore been active for more than twenty years. It is the only academic body, at the national level, that deals in military history.

The center’s objective is to promote and develop military history in all its facets: these include the history of warfare, of military institutions, of military science and techniques, the history of military historiography, military sociology and all fields of research fostering a better understanding of military history at the national and international level.

In the pursuit of these objectives, the center wants to develop and to experiment, at the level of teaching practice and of research, collaborative ventures between Italian and non-Italian scholars, the military and non-military, academics and non-academics that are able to move beyond the barriers existing between the Armed Forces and the Nation and between military and non-military history. This collaboration is reflected in didactic activity proper (such as seminars and lectures aimed at students and the public in general) as well as in research at various levels to which all participating bodies and scholars concur.

The Center’s Instituting Convention can be signed by all Italian universities that have an interest in joining the association after the Center’s managing Council has given the go-ahead. A relationship with the Center can be established by Italian and non-Italian public and private organizations that carry out related tasks.
The Academic Committee and the Managing council are organs of the Center.

The activities of the Center are coordinated by a President.
One or more vice-presidents are envisaged as is a secretary-general.
To date eleven universities that have nominated scholars as their representatives in the managing Council are part of the center: These are the universities of Bologna–Ravenna, Milan Cattolica, Milan Statale, Modena, Padua, Pavia, Pisa, Rome La Sapienza, Rome Tre, Siena, Turin.

The administrative headquarters is the President’s institutional affiliation.

President: prof. Nicola Labanca (University of Siena)
